I started this post in August and I just now took the time to finish it…
Just when you think you know what you are doing as a parent something inevitably comes along and jacks it all up again. Last week we had one of those things - Nolan started flag football. This is a whole new world for us! Scott and I haven’t been around the world of Optimist Football in about 20 years. Now here’s what I know…the actual game of football has not changed. Here’s what I didn’t know… the events, functions and responsibilities surrounding the game are now at a level 10 and completely out of control! We are apparently in a school where flag football is treated similar to that of small town high school Friday night football. Scott and I had no idea what we were getting into!
Nolan is loving it so far. Last year he had a couple of buddies that played and he asked if he could play. I think he liked the idea of wearing a team shirt on Friday and getting a “Cougar” backpack more than actually playing football but we decided to let him give it a shot. I sent in all of the enrollment forms at the end of the school year and never heard anything all summer. I really figured that meant the team was full. Then I got a random call in late August from the coach telling us – “Congrats! Nolan is on the team.” I guess they had an opening so we were first in line to get on the team. Lucky us? Oh wait, I mean.. Lucky us! He explained that we would need to get a mouth guard and cleats for the first practice and that he would then go over everything else then. My head was spinning after just the first little trip to Academy. I know nothing about sports – literally nothing. I stood on the row with mouth guards for at least 10 minutes. Christi mentioned something about a brand called “Shock Doctor” but there were three different levels and I had no idea what anything on the packaging meant or why I should pick the $30 one vs. the $1 version that was “Academy” brand. I ended up going with a mid-priced $15 one and just hope that Nolan still has teeth at the end of the season! She also mentioned making sure I allowed time to boil it. I really thought that must have been to sterilize it, like we did with pacifiers when they were babies. Um no, you have to boil the thing and then have them bite it so that it fits their mouth…who knew? Scott boiled it one afternoon; Nolan bit down and it kind of collapsed in the back and seemed to be a little folded over instead of really protecting the sides of his teeth. Yikes. We both freaked out a little and then after WAY too much discussion we decided it’s probably fine and we were just over reacting. We are pretty sure he is going to chew the dang thing up within a few weeks anyways. Again, we are just hoping he still has teeth at the end of the season. Nolan also had to have cleats which sounded easy enough until I was looking at the display. There are so many options and styles. High-tops/low tops what’s the difference and how the heck do I know what he would prefer? Since Scott and Nolan weren’t with me, I just defaulted to which ones looked the “cutest” and headed home. Of course I had to take the stupid things back and switch out sizes after Nolan’s foot was squeezed into the shoe. I didn’t know that “cleats run small so you should always buy a size larger then what your child actually wears”. Thanks random lady at the checkout. Where were you on Sunday when I bought the first pair? Ugh. I really thought that after these first few hiccups we were on track and ready for football. Oh boy was I wrong!
At the first parent meeting we learned there is a whole lot more to this Cougar business than practice and games! We have a very involved set of football parents! I think it’s really great that Nolan is part of such a neat team. The coaches are awesome and seriously love the boys and love football – I could not ask for a more supportive environment for my child to learn the sport. They video each game so that the coaches can review the footage and work directly with the kids the following week which is pretty neat. We have two parents on our team who are professional photographers so that is pretty cool too. Harry takes sports/action shots and creates a disk for all of the parents with all of the images at the end of the season. He sends us a few each week and they are amazing! (This was super exciting for me so I don’t have to lug the big camera to the games!) I can’t wait to get my hands on that disk! Amy takes all of the individual and team photos and makes this awesome collage thingy for all of the parents – can’t wait to see that either. The cheerleaders are super sweet and have awesome parents so they are always doing fun things for the boys and we have a couple of things planned for the girls too. “Cougar Nation” (all football teams k through 6th) do a couple of events together too which is special for the boys. They get to see the big guys and what’s in store for them as they get older and they get to be role models for the younger boys. Hudson has already talked about “when I’m a Cougar…”. It’s pretty cute. There has been lots of money spent on t-shirts, car decals, all the other stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the game itself. : ) I really though Nolan would be over this whole thing after the first few weeks but it’s actually been just the opposite. He seems to love it and is excited for practice and games.
I have been thankful for football this fall in a way I would have never expected. It has been just what our family needed. It’s been such a bright spot amongst pretty gloomy times. The Cougar parents have been supportive and sweet in a way I didn’t even know I needed. They have no emotional connection to “Scott and Ivy” which is weird but such a relief for me right now. They just want to talk to me about normal daily stuff. It’s refreshing. I worried so much the day I got the first coach’s call – I felt like football was the LAST thing I could think about during a time like this. I know that God’s timing is always perfect and this has definitely been an unexpected blessing from Him. Go Cougars!
Here are the few shots that I have taken...
He's in the middle, lucky # 13. I have no idea what position he plays so don't ask me. I know they all the boys on the offense for half the game and defense for the other half but that's about all I know. :)

Jim and Pat came down from OK a few weeks ago and so Kenley got to come to the game. Hudson and Kenley had a blast playing together! Later Hud said that Kenley was one of his girlfriends, to which I had to explain that she is your COUSIN and can not be your girlfriend!

These are two of Hud's buddies Gates and Brooks who also have big brothers on the team - love these kiddos!

Momma's meal ticket? I kinda doubt it - but he is awfully cute in his uniform!

Warming up with Scott before the game.

My sweet boys walking to the school for the "Cougar Nation" Pep Rally. (This is the first of the season BIG pep rally for all of the grades K through 6th.) It was cute and the boys had a lot of fun.

These are a few pictures from another night after practice when the cheerleaders came up after practice to have a little pep rally and play games with the boys. Nolan is on the end in the red shorts.

Addyson is cheering for the first time this year. Since she's in Kindergarten and they play all the 8am games so we typically don't get to see them at the fields. Nolan had an early game last weekend so they came over when their game was finished. Look how cute she is in her uniform...I could eat her up!
